On February 18, 1995, 19-year-old Army Private Tracie McBride was forcibly kidnapped at gunpoint at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas. Her body was discovered 12 days later under a bridge 20 miles north of San Angelo. Louis Jones, a retired soldier who was a bus driver at Goodfellow Air Force Base, was found guilty in federal court and sentenced to death for the kidnapping and murder of Miss McBride.
At the direction of James Kennedy, United States Marshal for the Southern District of Indiana, Louis Jones' death sentence was carried out by lethal injection at the Federal Bureau of Prisons facility at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.
At the time of her death, Miss McBride, from Centerville, Minnesota, was in training with the 344th Military Intelligence Battalion.
The 344th is known as "The Silent Sentinel". Hence the name for this operation. Their unit insignia was a key element in this patch design and the unit's number can be seen in the center design.
The date of the execution, 3-18-03, is noted on the center sunburst. The seven stars along the bottom of the patch represent the time of the execution, 7 AM.
The major law enforcement agencies involved are the Bureau of Prisons, USMS, FBI, Terre Haute PD, Indiana State Police, and Vigo County SD.
