As an immediate reaction to the 09/11/01 terrorist attacks, the nation’s airports, under the order of the federal government, were shut down. An analysis showed that airports did not have nearly enough security personnel on-hand to tackle what would now be a totally different way of flying. Operation Safe Skies was a government operation that placed National Guard soldiers and additional police officers in airports on a temporary basis until additional security personnel could be hired and trained for the airports. The patch was made for those who participated in Operation Safe Skies in New York airports.
