On July 17, 1996, Trans World Airlines Flight 800, which was bound for Paris, France, went down off the coast of New York’s Long Island, killing all 230 people on board following a mid-air explosion. The resulting investigation was the most extensive and costly ever at the time, encompassing the work of over 600 FBI investigators. Each piece of the plane was painstakingly recovered and placed in a hangar, where it was reconstructed. The official cause was ruled as an explosion in a fuel tank caused by the ignition of volatile vapors. However, many people reported seeing an unknown object flying through the sky just before the explosion, and conspiracy theories abound that the plane was shot down by a shoulder-fired missile. Other theorists claim a terrorist bomb caused the explosion. Either way, they all state that the investigation was a cover-up designed to insure that Bill Clinton and Al Gore had a legitimate chance to retain the US Presidency, which could have been in doubt since their administration purportedly authorized the sale of shoulder-fired missiles to known terrorist organizations prior to this incident. Conspiracy theories continue to arise, even as late as July 2004.
